"Joe who?"

Why tell the truth when you can make it up and no one will check?
The old adage that if a politicians' lips are moving that must mean they're lying isn't far from describing many words that come from the mouth of Joe Arpaio. Starting with his approval ratings and going all the way down to his statements about undocumented immigrants, if there's one you can say with certainty about Joe Arpaio's statements it is this: don't believe it until you check the facts. You'll find Joe Arpaio is deceiving you more often than he tells the truth. Remember, as an undercover drug agent, Arpaio's job was to lie to people to make them believe something that wasn't true. He is a master of redirection and deception. Is he playing the same game with voters? Look at the facts and decide for yourself.

B.S. Meter - Full of It

"My approval ratings are 80%."

Total B.S. No known recent scientific poll taken by any reliable research organization supports this outrageous claim--unless you add things together that were not intended to be added together. If the voters are, as he says, the only poll that counts, then only 56% of the voters approved of him in 2004.

  • B.S. Meter - Full of It

"I'm the only one enforcing all of the immigration laws."

Total B.S. What this statement really means is he will enforce the laws only when he does it himself. If he works with others, he'll have to share the credit. The truth is that under Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriff's office is the least effective law enforcement agencies there is when it comes to immigration law enforcement. The City of Phoenix has turned over seven times the number of undocumented immigrants to federal authorities than has the MCSO.

  • B.S. Meter - Full of It"My jails are austere but humane."

Total B.S. Under Joe Arpaio's (mis)management, the Maricopa County Sheriff's jails have been the subject of more jail condition lawsuits (over 2,700) than any other jail in any other county anywhere in the United States. In fact, Maricopa County taxpayers have paid out over $42 million in lawsuits settlements as the direct result of the inhumane treatment detainees (including people who have never been convicted of any crime) have received in Joe Arpaio's jails.

Email lies are a hallmark of the Arpaio mystique. One email that is making the rounds of Maricopa County seniors contains the subject "Joe Arpaio should run for President." This prime example of B.S. makes the outrageuos claims that Arapio has saved the County millions of dollars when he took over the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) department, was elected with 83% of the vote, and other disprovable claims. How true are the stories in Arpaio's new book? According to a fairly detailed investigation into some of the claims made in his latest book, Arpaio's stories may be leaning towards more fiction than reality. read more
